HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: Big bounce back for Braintree

May 13, 2017

Dan Ventura Saturday, May 13, 2017 Credit: Courtesy comments BRAINTREE – In a game filled with more errors and miscues than a Sunday morning t-ball game, Braintree starting pitcher Jack Andrews stood tall. Andrews (six strikeouts) went the full seven innings and scattered six hits, as Braintree (10-4) bounced back following two consecutive losses with a huge 3-1 victory over visiting Newton North yesterday in a Bay State Conference showdown. “(Jack) has had a tremendous year, he is 4-1 on the mound and he has really filled a void for us after we lost a lot of pitching from the past two years,” said Braintree coach Bill O’Connell. “We did not play well behind him, but you have to give him a lot of credit for battling.” After Andrews pitched around a two-on, nobody out jam in the top of the first, Braintree grabbed a 1-0 lead in the last of the frame. Alex Kennedy led off with a single against Newton North starter Jim Hodgson, and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice from Justin Files, before coming around to score on a RBI single by Kevin O’Brien. Newton North (9-5) would get consecutive singles from Dante Taylor and Ryan McGaughlin to begin the second, but, again, Andrews escaped damage with two strikeouts and a fly out to end the threat. Braintree extended its lead in the last of the third when O’Brien reached on an infield error (Newton North finished with three), took third on a wayward two-base pickoff attempt before scoring to make it 2-0 on a suicide squeeze RBI from Brennan Quigley. A RBI double from Files in the fourth plated Jackson Duffy (single) to make it 3-0, and from there Andrews took control, setting the Tigers down in both the fifth and sixth innings with relative ease. Newton North would eventually score a run in the seventh on a RBI fielder’s choice by John Grady, but Andrews worked around two additional errors to close out the game. “We had lost two games in a row, and the kids still came out and took care of business against a good team,” O’Connell said. “And Jack gave us a chance today with his performance.” Share this Article Top Sports Stories red sox
