The semiconductor industry is currently grappling with oversupply challenges — and declining venture funding — after widespread shortages during the pandemic led to a production boom, but the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is providing new opportunities.

For example, the growing popularity of EVs has also increased demand for high-performing semiconductors like silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN), which can handle high-power applications more efficiently than traditional silicon chips — useful for increasing the driving range of EVs. Bosch, one of the leading automotive parts suppliers globally, recently doubled down on the silicon carbide space by acquiring TSI Semiconductors and announcing plans to invest $1.5B in upgrading one of its facilities to produce SiC semiconductors.

This trend towards efficient and high-performing semiconductors in the EV industry is likely to continue as automakers seek ways to improve vehicle performance and range.

Investors have poured billions of dollars into robotaxi companies, with GM subsidiary Cruise and Alphabet’s self-driving unit Waymo bringing in the bulk of that funding.

But soaring costs and regulatory uncertainty have prevented these companies from fully commercializing their solutions, even with consolidation in the space. Former market leader Argo AI even shut down in October, despite billion-dollar investments from Ford and Volkswagen.

Most recently, GM’s Cruise reported disappointing numbers, losing $561M in Q1’23 on $30M in revenue. The results fuel growing concerns around the viability of robotaxis.

Recent major blackouts have shown that traditional electrical grids are not able to handle the increasing demand for electricity or respond quickly enough when outages occur.

Smart grids, which rely on new technologies like smart meters and distributed energy resources to optimize energy flows and utility operations, are designed to be more resilient, efficient, and secure than traditional electrical grids. They allow utilities to better monitor and manage electricity flows, detect outages, and respond to restore power.

They are also a key part of transitioning toward a low-carbon economy, helping move away from fossil fuels while still providing reliable electricity services to households and businesses around the world.

Generative AI — which refers to AI technologies that generate entirely new content, from lines of code to images to human-like speech — is kindling excitement across manufacturing, automotive, and other industrial sectors.

The tech is already delivering time and cost savings in a range of business functions, from R&D to product design. For instance, generative AI could reduce design timelines by up to 90% for infrastructure projects and slash raw material use by upwards of 95% in industrial design.

Industrials incumbents are moving quickly to take advantage. Hyundai, for instance, has used Autodesk’s generative design software to figure out how to efficiently make parts for new vehicle modalities. IBM, meanwhile, is using generative AI to identify and test computer chip materials.

The power grid has changed more over the last decade than over the previous century. New technologies like virtual power plants and energy efficiency solutions have rapidly entered the market to make the grid more sustainable, reliable, and efficient.

Thanks to these new technologies, carbon emissions from the electric power sector in the US have fallen by almost a third in the past decade or so. This occurred despite a similar amount of electricity generation and no increase in the inflation-adjusted real price of electricity.

As one of the largest oil majors globally, TotalEnergies has long dominated the international energy markets. With $184.7B in annual revenue in 2021, the energy incumbent’s business strategy has traditionally focused on fossil fuels.

However, the company’s recent rebrand from Total to TotalEnergies reflects a change in strategy to include more sustainable business segments. As part of the transition, the company is focused on vehicle electrification (both the infrastructure and charging solutions to optimize the flow of energy) as well as EV battery tech.

The power grid is currently undergoing some of the biggest operational changes since the adoption of AC power more than a century ago.

The old power grid was centered around large, centralized, fossil fuel-based power plants located away from population centers as well as the use of transmission and distribution lines to connect power generators with power consumers.

Renewable energy sources like solar and wind are now challenging the fossil fuel-based nature of conventional power generation, while new distributed energy resources (DERs) like rooftop solar panels are shifting power stations to a more decentralized model. While these changes make the power grid more sustainable, new digitization and automation tech is required to bring these devices onto the grid in a way that is cost-competitive with conventional fossil fuel power generation.

In 2015, Elon Musk made a bold prediction that vehicle electrification would increase lithium-ion battery demand — by a lot.

At the time, Tesla was delivering around 50,000 vehicles a year. That year, the company broke ground on its battery Gigafactory production site in Nevada. That site would churn out enough batteries to power 500,000 Teslas per year. And more sites like this were needed, Musk claimed.

It’s clear that Musk’s vision panned out, with the company on track to deliver more than 1M vehicles this year alone. This foresight allowed Tesla to become a dominant leader in the EV battery tech space. But as EV adoption becomes more mainstream, startups — with backing from legacy auto OEMs, among other players — have popped up to compete with Tesla on battery tech.

Auto incumbents like Ford, General Motors, and Volkswagen have staked the success of their electrification roadmaps on these startups — from battery materials startups aiming to disrupt Tesla’s lithium-ion battery tech, to grid software companies that provide new EV charging solutions like vehicle-to-grid tech, to battery recycling companies that could transform the battery production process.

In this report, we look at how tech companies are unbundling Tesla and the broader EV battery tech business, broken out by battery materials, battery management systems, and battery lifecycle.

What is autonomous trucking?

Autonomous trucking providers are developing self-driving systems for long-haul trucking applications to fully automate the movement of freight on highways and major roadways. Because highway driving is relatively repetitive and predictable, it can be easier to automate than driving in complex urban environments.

Some companies are working on fully autonomous driving solutions (Level 4+), while others are focused on Level 2 or 3 advanced driver systems that still require a driver to be in the vehicle.

Electric vehicles (EVs) make up just a fraction of global automotive sales, as concerns around range length, charging infrastructure, and vehicle cost hinder adoption.

But an increasing number of governments and companies expect EVs to reach mass adoption within the next decade. For example, the UK will ban the sale of new gas and diesel cars starting in 2035, while China has set a goal for EVs to make up 25% of all vehicle sales within 5 years.

A growing number of early-stage software and computer hardware startups are looking to capitalize on this shift. These companies’ areas of focus range from predictive analytics for batteries and charging tech, to operating systems for charging infrastructure, to software that streamlines fleet operations.
