Biotechnology companies exceeded $175B in global sales in 2013, and the year saw the largest wave of IPOs since the 2000-2001 bubble. Genomics, a field within the biotech industry focused on the study of organisms genes, experienced especially high activity in 2013.
The sector saw close to $472M in venture capital financing across 46 deals. This was a 25% uptick in funding growth YoY. Geographically, deal activity for genomic and biotech companies was heavily concentrated in California. The state had nearly 39% of deals between 2012 and 2013.
In the first two quarters of 2013, the healthcare sector accounted for over ½ of all venture-backed IPOs. Public biotech offerings were in demand, with technologies like gene therapy and RNA interference making significant strides in the market.
The biotechnology startups that raised the most funding in 2013 were Acetylon Pharmaceuticals ($100M), Bellerophon Therapeutics ($80M), and PTC Therapeutics ($60M).
