Top Biotech Pharma Companies 2014
Biotech companies gained significant momentum in 2013, and despite speculation, their pace did not slow down. 2014 saw more than 60 US based VC backed healthcare companies go public–a 65% increase from 2013. Nearly half of all VC-backed healthcare exit activity in the US was in the form of an IPO. In Q1 alone, medical devices and biotech tied for the most deals, with each industry notching 27% of all healthcare VC deals.
Q2 was the strongest quarter of the year, with $2.7B invested across 161 deals by VC firms in life sciences–which encompases medical devices, pharma, and biotech.
In Q3 of 2014, early stage healthcare deal sizes reached a two year high at $5.03M. MPM Capital had the highest number of M&A or IPO exits in the healthcare sector. Their best IPO performer overall (not just in life sciences) was biotechnology company Radius–which was up over 200% from its IPO price.
By the end of the year, life science companies raised $8.2B from VC firms. This was a 28% increase YoY. Moderna’s $450M Series E deal was the largest of 2014, and the biggest deal in the history of the biotech industry.
