Top Biotech Pharma Companies 2016
In 2016 there was anticipation that the biotech industry would begin to experience a decline, and after a series of record breaking years for funding, the drop finally happened.
The first quarters of the year were impacted by the 2016 presidential election, throughout which presidential nominee Hillary Clinton made drug price reform a focus in her campaign. This led to drug and biotech companies to come under constant scrutiny due to their increases in price of life-saving drugs. However, after Donald Trump’s election win, pharmaceutical and biotechnology stocks soared.
On the global stage, biotechnology companies also faced uncertainty in Europe due to the UK’s vote to leave the EU. There were concerns that after Brexit, drugs might be regulated differently in the UK and in EU countries.
By Q3’16, there were only 29 biotech IPOs compared to 55 in 2015. Despite the declines, the industry still saw several bright spots. Clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR) and cancer therapeutics saw large jumps in funding, with the latter up 153% from previous years.
Genomics also experienced growth in 2016, with an uptick in biotech M&A deals within the space. Unlike other years where corporate investors dominated in genomics funding, 2016 saw investors within private equity, family offices, and asset management surpass VCs in terms of participation.
