2018 began with the largest biotech M&A deal since 2016 when Celegene acquired Impact Biomedicines for $7B. After a $22.5M Series A financing in October 2017, the company exited merely 3 months later. Cancer therapeutics, which is a treatment that targets changes in cancer cells, continued to be a major space of interest in the biotech industry. The chart below shows the top exits in cancer therapeutics in the last five years, from 2013 to 2018.
Moderna Therapeutics rang out the year with a historic IPO for biotech, raising $604.3M. It was the third most highly valued VC exit in 2018, behind Spotify and Dropbox. Other notable biotech IPOs in 2018 included Allogene Therapeutics at $373M, Rubius Therapeutics at $241M, and Homology at $144M.
The year ended with a total of 58 IPOs in biotech, up from 36 in 2017. More than half of these IPOs raised $100M or more, and seven deals exceeded $200M.
